Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai:-In a dramatic protest against the alleged sexual assault of a student at Anna University, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai fulfilled his promise to self-flagellate. On Friday, outside his home, Annamalai whipped himself six times in a symbolic act to draw attention to the issue. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
Earlier, on Thursday, Annamalai had announced that he would whip himself at 10:00 AM on December 27 as a form of self-punishment to highlight the injustice and ensure the public and authorities take the matter seriously. He also vowed to remain barefoot until the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government is ousted.
The Protest and Its Message
After the act, Annamalai stated:
“Anyone familiar with Tamil culture knows that acts like self-punishment are part of our heritage. This is not against any individual or group but against the ongoing injustices in the state. What happened at Anna University is just a turning point. Over the past three years, we’ve witnessed numerous cases of injustice against women, children, and ordinary citizens, as well as rampant corruption in the state.”
Annamalai accused the ruling DMK of protecting the accused in the case. He claimed that the accused is closely associated with the DMK and its student wing, and that this political connection allowed him to commit such heinous acts without fear of consequences.
To support his allegations, Annamalai shared photographs of the accused with DMK leaders and demanded action against the state government for shielding criminals. He asserted that the police had failed to take swift action due to the accused’s political connections.
Details of the Case
The accused, identified as Gyanasekaran, is a 37-year-old habitual offender. Tamil Nadu’s law minister, S. Regupathy, clarified that the accused is not a primary member of the DMK. However, reports revealed that he is linked to the party’s student wing and has at least ten criminal cases registered against him.
In this case, Gyanasekaran allegedly threatened the victim, stating that she must come to meet him whenever he called. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance of the matter and strongly condemned the incident.
National Commission for Women’s Action
The NCW wrote to Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal, urging the application of Section 71 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, which addresses habitual offenders. The NCW pointed out that Gyanasekaran has a history of similar offenses, and accused authorities of ignoring previous complaints against him.
The NCW also criticized the police for leaking the victim’s identity, violating her right to privacy. The Commission demanded strict action against the officers responsible for this breach and requested detailed reports on all previous FIRs filed against the accused.
Political and Public Reaction
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across political and public spheres. Several parties, including BJP, AIADMK, and CPI(M), criticized the police for exposing the victim’s identity. Opposition leaders demanded accountability from the DMK government and immediate justice for the victim.
