Usually, it’s not surprising to see candidates touching the feet of senior leaders like PM Modi, but what happened at this rally was indeed a rarity. During the event, a BJP candidate touched PM Modi’s feet on stage, but the surprising part was that PM Modi bent down three times to touch the candidate’s feet.
This unusual scene unfolded when PM Modi visited the Karatar Nagar area in North-East Delhi as part of his campaign for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on 5th February. As the rally began, BJP candidates came one by one to meet PM Modi. When BJP’s Ravindra Negi, the candidate for the Patparganj assembly seat, approached PM Modi, he bent down and touched the Prime Minister’s feet. In return, PM Modi too bent down and touched Negi’s feet three times. Negi stood there smiling, and after the brief moment, PM Modi signaled him to move ahead. The video of this incident quickly went viral on social media.
This act of PM Modi touching the feet of a candidate is a rare sight. Generally, the Prime Minister is seen bending down to touch the feet of elderly women or men, but this time it was a BJP candidate, Ravindra Negi, who received this gesture. Now, let’s understand who Ravindra Negi is, why he’s so significant for BJP, and why even Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is worried about his candidacy.
Ravindra Negi is contesting from Patparganj assembly seat in East Delhi as a BJP candidate. His competitors are AAP’s Awadh Ojha and Congress’s Chaudhary Anil Kumar. Negi, 48 years old, hails from Uttarakhand and is currently serving as a member of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, representing the Vinod Nagar Ward-198. He is known for his active participation in the region and has gained a reputation for being a staunch Hindu. He has also been involved in some controversial videos related to Muslims, which often circulate on social media.
Ravindra Negi is an important candidate for BJP in this election, primarily because of the Patparganj assembly seat. In the previous elections, this seat was won by AAP’s Manish Sisodia. Negi gave Sisodia a tough competition, and he managed to narrow down Sisodia’s lead to just 3,000 votes. This is why BJP has fielded Negi in an attempt to capture this seat. Manish Sisodia is not contesting this time, which is why BJP sees an opportunity here. Another factor is the significant population of Uttarakhandis in the Patparganj area, and Negi himself being from Uttarakhand makes him a relatable figure for the voters.
This seat has a significant number of voters from the Uttarakhand and Purvanchal regions, which could work in Negi’s favor. His reputation among the Uttarakhandis could lead to strong support, and the Purvanchal vote bank could also shift towards him due to BJP’s popularity. Patparganj is a crucial assembly constituency in East Delhi, with areas like Mayur Vihar and Kondli being prominent. In the last election, the margin of victory was quite narrow, with Sisodia securing 70,163 votes while Negi received 66,956 votes. Congress candidate Laxman Rawat received 2,802 votes. This time, the competition is between Negi, who has good political experience, and new AAP candidate Awadh Ojha, and former Congress MLA Anil Kumar.
Patparganj has over 2.5 lakh voters, and BJP is hoping that Negi’s popularity among Uttarakhandis and Purvanchalis will help them secure the seat. The seat could potentially be a game-changer in this election, given the narrow victory margin from the last time and the strong competition this year.
