Google Chrome:-The U.S. government is once again pressuring Google to sell its Chrome browser to another company. This is not the first time—it had already suggested this in November 2024. Now, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is once again asking Google to separate itself from Chrome.
Why is the U.S. Government Targeting Google Chrome?
Google Chrome is one of the most widely used browsers in the world. Millions of people use it on their phones, tablets, and computers to search for information. Since Google owns both Chrome and the Google Search engine, it has a huge advantage over other search engine companies like Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo.
The U.S. government believes that because Google controls both the browser and the search engine, other search engine companies do not get a fair chance to compete. The DOJ wants to reduce Google’s monopoly and create a level playing field for other companies.
What Does the U.S. Government Want?
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is not only asking Google to sell Chrome but is also suggesting that:
- Chrome should not come pre-installed as the default browser on devices like Apple iPhones, Samsung smartphones, or other brands.
- Companies like Apple and Mozilla should not be forced to use Chrome as their default or recommended browser.
- Google should allow users to easily choose other search engines instead of forcing them to use Google Search.
How Does Google Respond?
Google has strongly opposed these demands, saying that selling Chrome would hurt American consumers, the economy, and even national security. Instead of selling Chrome, Google has proposed some small changes, such as:
- Allowing Apple and other partners to let users choose different default search engines.
- Allowing Google to pay for prime placement instead of forcing Chrome as the default option.
Google also pointed out that it pays billions of dollars to companies like Apple to keep Google Search as the default option on their devices.
The U.S. government is trying to break Google’s monopoly in online search by separating Chrome and Google Search. However, Google is pushing back with its own arguments. If the DOJ forces Google to sell Chrome, it could change the way we browse the internet and give more opportunities to competitors.
