According to the prosecution, Sunil had asked his mother for money for alcohol, but she refused to give money. Angered by this, Sunil brutally attacked his mother. After killing her, he cut her body parts into pieces and then started cooking some of the parts in a pan.
Investigation into the case revealed that he removed his mother’s brain, heart, liver, kidney and intestine and tried to cook and eat the ribs. When the incident came to the notice of the police, Sunil was caught with the organs being cooked in his house. The police officers were also shaken to see this horrific incident.
Court’s decision: In 2021, the Kolhapur court convicted Sunil Kuchkorvi in this case and sentenced him to death. Sunil had filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court challenging this decision, but the High Court also upheld the lower court’s decision.
On 2 October 2024, a division bench of the Bombay High Court, consisting of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan, approved Sunil’s death sentence. The court said that this is a rarest of rare case of cannibalism, in which there is no possibility of reform of the convict. The court also said in its verdict that if he is sentenced to life imprisonment, he can commit similar crimes in jail. Therefore, death penalty is the appropriate punishment.
