Russia’s stance
Russia, which has been a long-time ally of Syria, gave refuge to Bashar al-Assad and his family in Moscow on humanitarian grounds. Russia wants Syria’s borders and balance of power to be maintained. However, Russia’s position may weaken due to the ongoing war with Ukraine.
Strategy of America and Israel

Influence of rebel groups
Different rebel groups dominate different parts of Syria:
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF):
This group controls the eastern part of Syria and has the support of America. Its aim is to make Syria secular and democratic.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS):
This is the new form of Al Nusra Front and controls a large part of central and northern Syria. It has the support of Turkey.
Syrian National Army (SNA):
It occupies northwestern Syria. It also operates with the support of Turkey.
Alawite Forces:
This group is effective in the western coastal areas and is a supporter of the Assad regime. It has the support of Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.
Will parts of Syria be divided?
Given the current situation in Syria, the apprehension has increased that the country may be divided into five parts.
Kurdish group SDF can capture eastern areas.
HTS and other Islamist groups can control central and northern Syria.
